Exercise – Inchworm Quadrupedal Movement
Inchworms are actually caterpillars with legs at both ends of their bodies and none in the middle – making them look like they arch as they move. The Inchworm Quadrupedal Movement is great strength or movement conditioning for parkour athletes, handbalancers, and yogis. Jumping or walking down dog for distance is quite the exercise.
You will be moving one end of your body at a time – hands and feet. Walk your hands forward while your feet keep in place; then it’s the other way around!
Push-ups between hand or feet movement is a great way to integrate body weight strength work and to make this exercise a little harder. A harder variation would be to include a pike press as well. We love this exercise because there are dozens of ways to make this easier or more difficult. Try any of the following:
- Straddle the legs to ease on the flexibility and strength this exercise requires
- Tripod with either one foot or arm. If you’re attempting with one arm, warm up your wrists properly
- Hop with the hands and feet instead of walking them out
- Walk your feet as far forward as you can for piked hips
