Exercise – Gorilla (AKA Machine / Transformer)
Gorilla is a beginner level transition also referred to as a “Machine” or “Transformer”. It’s pulled from breakdancing and is similarly seen in parkour or quadrupedal movement. This unique groundwork skill often acts as a transition between one or more combos. The Gorilla is a great progression for 1990s, Sailor Moons, and Coin Drops.
If you twist to the left, start in a ready stance and then lean to your right and put most of your weight on your right foot. Then pick up your left foot and “sweep” it behind you as you lean to your left quickly and reach towards the ground with your right hand. Hop off of your right foot and then switch hands so that your left hand is on the ground and continue the momentum and land like a normal scoot: Land on your left leg first and keep your right leg behind you to be used for power. You may choose to land in an “eagle” position and swing, land in a “pop” stance and flip, alternate legs on takeoff and do a vanish, and much more. If you prefer twisting to the right, mirror these directions.
Once you have Gorillas down, there’s a number of ways to begin incorporating groundwork into your tricking practice. You can also pair this skill down with quadrupedal side monkeys, ground kongs, or lateral plank walks.
- Start or connect a combo with the Gorilla
- Continue through with a swing, pop, or vanish out of the Gorilla
- Work towards the 1990, Sailor Moon or Coin Drop
