Exercise – Cat Crawls
The Cat Crawl is a foundational key to unlocking most quadrupedal movement. This exercise helps to build overall torso strength, coordination, and balance that is used in your day-to-day life from getting up from the ground to ducking under an object/obstacle.
A few things to remember:
- Keep your hands flat and wide
- Work to have opposite limb movement (Contralateral)
- Knees low and close to the ground
- Pick the hands and feet up as you take steps to avoid abrasion
There’s many variations to try to mix things up. Once you have a solid Cat Crawl pattern down, you can try any of the following:
- Crawling backwards
- Navigating different landscapes, inclines, or surfaces
- Go for distance. How far can you go before stopping?
- With ankle or wrist weights
