Exercise – Cartwheel

The Cartwheel is a beginner level tumbling skill in our tricking curriculum. It is a great combo-opening trick that transitions easily to other movements. Learning the Cartwheel is foundational to the progression of butterfly kicks, aerials, and more.

If you twist to the left, begin in a lunge with your left leg in front. Reach with your arms forward to gain momentum and plant your left hand before your right hand. Your hands should be placed just in front of the left foot. Kick backward with your right leg as you get into a sideways handstand and turn your hips a full 180° and land on your right leg. Your chest should be facing away from the direction you began and you should be in a lunge position on the opposite leg that you began your cartwheel in.

Mastering the Cartwheel is key to unlocking many new tricking skills. Once you have this down, progress towards:

  • Start or continue a combo with the Cartwheel
  • Learn other tricks out of the setup like front flip and full twist
  • Work towards the butterfly kick or aerial
