Exercise – 540 Kick

The 540 Kick is an advanced beginner level kicking skill in our tricking curriculum. It is a great combo-opening trick that transitions easily to other movements. Learning the 540 Kick is foundational to the progression of sideswipes, jackknives, and more.

If you twist to the left, face your target in a neutral stance, step over 180° with your right leg so that your back is facing your target and you are in a “pop” stance. Turn your head to left to face your target while lifting your left leg up as a knee and jump. While airborne, perform a round kick or inside crescent kick towards your target with your right leg. Drive that right leg over the left leg until you land on the kicking leg. If you prefer twisting to the right, mirror these directions.

Mastering the 540 Kick is key to unlocking many new tricking skills. Once you have this down, progress towards:

  • Start or connect a combo with the 540 Kick
  • Combo into a cartwheel or butterfly variation
  • Work towards the sideswipe or the jackknife
