Parkour LEADs Curriculum

Over the course of ten weeks, you will meet with a group of peers and your instructor for a 60 to 90 minute discussion on a different unit based on the program’s Parkour Leadership Guidebook. We’ll have open discussions on leadership, reflect on our personal experiences, and learn new skills through progressive exercises to accelerate our growth. Our classroom is a great ‘lab’ space for deep collection and connection with like-minded peers and is built on two agreements:

  • I, as a participant, agree to put forth my best efforts in completing the program’s coursework by attending all classes and accomplishing the Parkour LEADs Program Guidebook.
  • I, as a partcipant, agree to holding confidentiality of the program’s classes and my peers. I understand and respect that my peers may share and express their vulnerabilities within the space of the Parkour LEADs program.

The Parkour Leadership Guidebook

The accompanying Parkour LEADs Guidebook is designed to help you develop the responsibilities, knowledge, and experiences of an effective leader. Throughout the guide, you will find materials and exercises to help you learn and reinforce critical thinking skills. Our coursework will steer conversations in-class and out with your local network. The guidebook plays an integral part of the parkour leadership development program.

01 | Defining Leadership

What is great leadership? A common misconception is that individuals are naturally gifted with the ability to guide others. The truth is that leadership, like any other skill, can be acquired with time, effort, and practice. We’ll explore and define leadership through qualities by reflecting on our personal traits, strengths, and blindspots.

02 | Parkour's History

The original French practitioners, Yamakasi, called their practice art du deplacement. They would practice challenging their physical fitness to sharpen both their mind and body. This developed sense of challenge helped to explore two pillars:

  • Être Fort Pour Être Utile – “Be Strong to be Useful”
  • Etre et Durer – “To Be and to Last”

Learn more about the discipline’s pillars and how we can find motivation in our personal practices.

03 | Commitment

Are you compelled to succeed? It takes commitment to achieve your dreams. No matter where you are – commitment is waiting inside. How can we tap into this energy to help you find success? Explore what it takes to set goals and to achieve our dreams. Much like parkour, we can exercise and build our commitment. We’ll dive into breaking down goals utilizing tools such as the Eisenhower Matrix, time management, and more.

04 | Confidence

Many people will credit their confidence and self-esteem in their success. Like commitment, courage, or empathy, a great self-esteem can be incredibly elusive. We’ll search for an approach that will help to ground our success and authenticity through a practice of personal affirmations and gratitude. Both are important habits to building healthy and happier lives.

05 | Composure

Do you struggle to stay positive? Finding optimism through failure reflects on our ability to roll with the punches. Gain insight on how to find greater control and influence on the things we can directly impact.

06 | Character

Should we shelter others from what we think? What are the downsides for the short-term? And long term? Radical honesty is about maximizing success as leaders by being authentic to ourselves. This kind of honesty is not just about others either, we have to face uncomfortable truths about ourselves as well. Leaern how to better align to your personal values and actions.

07 | Communication

Finding the strength of our voice through five core skills in effective communication. They include:

  • Interpersonal Communication
  • Public Speaking
  • Writing
  • Problem-solving
  • Analytics Thinking

You will learn the power of storytelling and utilize non-violent communication as methods to empower your voice.

08 | Adversity

How do we reach out for help to our supportive network? With every mission, we will come across obstacles that challenge our abilities to succeed. No leader is perfect or infallible. Showing our imperfections, the cracks in our armor, only proves that we’re all human. Vulnerability is powerful when it’s relevant to the situation. Particularly when we share how we feel about an exciting project or a tough decision. Our checklists will help you recognize, go for, and accept the gift of help.

09 | Growth Mindset

Building a reflective practice and active research in our leadership. Flexing our brains for personal growth and development.

After studying thousands of children, psychologist Dr.Carol Dweck noticed that some individuals rebounded from failure while others were left devastated by even the smallest setbacks. This rebound determined that our brains are incredibly malleable with practice. Leaders can develop their skills, talent, and character using good strategies, asking questions, reflecting, and practicing. If you can believe that you can change, you can grow. Let’s break down our long term goals with SMART and building strong circles of trusted people.

10 | Discovery & Exploration

Where do we go from here? We’ll put many of the program tools into action including a healthy growth mindset, reflection, SMART goals, Eisenhower Matrix, and more.

About the Program Author

“I want the Parkour LEADs to be a positive and purposeful influence for young parkour athletes. In late 2005, I stumbled upon parkour in my mid-teens and shortly started NCParkour, a community forum for parkour practitioners. NCParkour connected hundreds of parkour athletes and ignited dozens of athletic gatherings… but I was still left feeling more could be done. Where do I start? How do I measure my success? Over the years I have reflected on community impact and leadership. Through my experiences, I have pieced together this developmental program. It’s directly influenced by many practices, discussions, or exercises I’ve done over the years – whether personally or through teachers. More important to me – I learned it to be tough to admire great leadership and to replicate its traits unless we think, question, and talk about it. That is a space that I want to help foster and grow. I believe some of the keys to successful and happy people are information and communication – this is built for you.” – Alan Tran

Alan Tran supports North Carolina’s parkour community through Enso Movement, leads the Art of Retreat event, and helps direct the United States Parkour Association. He is currently working on his tutorship with ADAPT Qualifications.
